Centering Doula Care on Single Mothers and Parents

As a birth and postpartum doula, I specialize in caring for single mothers and parents who are navigating their pregnancy without the support of a partner. For single-mothers-by-choice (SMBC) or parents who find themselves unexpectedly single during the course of their pregnancy, the prospect of birth can be daunting. It can seem like everyone is heading to the labour floor with a spouse or partner, and you might not even know where to begin planning for your new baby alone.

That’s where I step in! I tailor my teachings during our prenatal meetings to address the unique needs of single parents. Whether that’s making a plan for preparing meals ahead of time, scheduling visits from friends and family who will be able to live-in during the early weeks, or discussing how you can protect your rest with co-sleeping or an overnight doula, I will help you birth your baby with the confidence to push through any struggles you may face.

Single mothers and parents who hire me can also decide that they would like me to be their primary support person. For clients whose families are estranged or live far away, I can act as the primary support. I will help you make your way to your birth location and accompany you in triage. I believe that no one should have to go through early labour alone, and I am able to attend to my single clients as soon as labour has started.

As a doula for SMBC and single parents, I know that my clients’ journeys all look vastly different. I take the time to hear my clients’ stories and identify emotions and tensions that may need to be resolved before labour can begin. Whether you have dreamt about this baby your whole life, or you regret the choices you made with your ex-spouse, we will explore the stories you tell yourself about your pregnancy and work to cultivate an attitude of resilience, strength, and patience that you will need to care for your new baby.

If you are approaching labour without the support of a partner, I’d be honored to care for you and guide you through the life-altering transition of growing your family!
